Qual é o USP do criativo português?

The Argentinians are good at TVCs, the Brazilians in craft, what about the Portuguese? What is our USP?
First of all, I want to thank you for the invitation. I'm a huge fan of this project, it's something essential for the Portuguese creative industry and I'm curious to see your next initiatives. I also admire the passion involved. It is not easy to manage a project, much less remotely. Kudos to you!

Answering the question: I think this country has a good combination of ingredients and Portuguese designers are the result of that.

On the one hand, we are a European country, which makes us look at the references of German and Nordic design. On the other hand, we are a Latin country, which makes our design full of colour and life. We have the best of both worlds in my opinion. I think this balance is beautiful and I am so proud to be a part of such a talented design community.

Qual é a tua campanha/ideia Portuguesa preferida?

Tudo o que sai da This is Pacifica, Burocratik, Unlock, Desisto, Silvadesigners, Solid Dogma e Judas.

What’s your favourite Portuguese idea/campaign?
Everything that comes out of This is Pacifica, Burocratik, Unlock, Desisto, Silvadesigners, Solid Dogma and Judas. For example, the recent piece from This is Pacifica: CO2AT. A coat that emits oxygen.

On the advertising side, and as a music fan, I'm a big fan of the campaign that O Escritório did for Super Bock about Portuguese Hip Hop.

Com quem gostarias de trabalhar um dia?

Se o Sam the Kid me deixasse fazer merch para a TV Chelas ou se o Professor Marcelo me deixasse redesenhar a bandeira portuguesa era um designer feliz.
Who would you like to work with one day?

If Sam the Kid let me do merch for TV Chelas or if Professor Marcelo let me redesign the Portuguese flag, I would be a happy designer.

Which portuguese brands do you admire for its advertising?

In a somewhat macabre way, Chega. It's a party that couldn't be further away from I defend. Just saying this name gives me Voldemort vibes - we should change the name to Party-Whose-Name-Must-Not-Be-Pronounced.

However, as a creative, I find it hard to see creativity being used for evil. This is a party that was designed from scratch by marketers and advertisers (I'm looking at you João Gomes de Almeida, you fascist), with hyper-obvious, simplified communication and often with statements that are hard to disagree: who in this world is not anti-corruption for example? It's a far-right party with clean white billboards as if they wouldn't hurt a fly. It's a clean make-up, in toxic and dangerous ideas. And unfortunately, some people are buying them.

Which Portuguese brand would you like to change?

Brands with marked remnants of racism and colonialism. How can you still go to Sintra to buy cheesecakes in a place called Casa do Preto? A farm that proudly bears an image of a black slave on the façade. Or Negrita Cafés. These are brands that keep the problem alive. This is worsened by the fact that many people do not admit that there is a problem at all. Who believe there is no harm in perpetuating a stereotype or caricature and downplaying an entire group of people and using it to sell products or present an “exotic” image. These brands are decades old and nobody stopped to think they should change.

However, this question still arises. Last year, a restaurant called Xinoca appeared with a very offensive image in its logo. On the menu there were dishes with very unfortunate names: Pato com Lalanja, for example. No, it's not a mistake. Fortunately a group of people came together to end this name. The restaurant is now called Xao Xao.

What would you like to change in the Portuguese ad scene?

I think there is a lack of some kind of organization to coordinate all this. Let's call it the Order of Creatives, as lawyers and architects have it. This organization should tabulate prices for the entire industry (so that people don't charge a thousand euros for a project and others charge fifty thousand), put an end to unpaid competitions, unpaid internships, provide relevant information to those entering the market... Above all, it should be a platform to lift the beautiful Portuguese talent that we have working in this market.

In this regard, I would like to congratulate you on the “Ajuste de Contas”. This type of initiative is very important to start having these conversations about salaries without taboos and for the next wave of creatives to enter the market to know how much they’re worth.

What’s needed to make the Portuguese creative market more global?
I'm talking about the market I know best: design. In terms of talent, nothing is missing, it's already here. We have many Portuguese superstars, working both here and elsewhere. I miss some kind of platform that brings these people together and lifts them together. Both through the organization I talked about earlier, the Order of Creatives, as well as yours.

Vhils did this very well with Underdogs/Solid Dogma, and now we see AkaCorleone or Wasted Rita's name everywhere. That's what I see you doing with this Quem é Quem project. This is also what I'm trying to do with the organization that I coordinate with Inês Pérez, Descomunal.

What is Descomunal?
It's a platform from designers to designers. It operated for a year and a half under the name The Design Kids Lisbon, but we are transitioning to a new name, with a similar mission, but with a more independent and far more ambitious stance.

The objectives are: on the one hand to create a united, egalitarian and fair design community; and on the other hand, to provide information and tools to level the industry and help those who are just starting out. We have monthly events, always different, but always focused on giving creatives something that doesn't exist at the moment. At the same time, we will have programs focused on mentoring, which is, unfortunately, an uncommon practice in Portugal. In the future, as I said, the ambition is big.

“Reach out to people.” Peçam mentoria, recomendações, dicas, o que for.
What advice would you give to a creative coming to Portugal from abroad?
"Reach out to people." It's my advice to everyone, by the way. People, in general, are willing to help when they receive a request for help. Ask for mentoring, recommendations, tips, whatever. As my grandfather used to say, “quem não chora não mama”. If you want to talk to me for example, send a DM to @sebdelaguardia.

What are your plans for the future?
I have just accepted a challenge that is very different from the typical path of a designer used to agencies and studios, which has been my path. I took over the Creative Direction of Kitch, a very interesting and fast growing startup that operates in the catering world and focuses on helping independent restaurants stay that way. My goal here will be to help the brand and company grow, while putting interesting and innovative ideas on the street.

Why did you decide to change from agencies to startups?
On the one hand, because I believe in the mission. Catering is a dog-eat-dog world, with long hours and short margins. Kitch's goal is to change this: to help restaurants with tools that make their lives easier, namely when it comes to putting their food on a courier's motorbike and how to make a profit from it.

On the other hand, I wanted to be part of a project that was bigger than me. As a designer, I was used to doing multiple projects for multiple clients at the same time. But then I noticed that the impact of that project was relatively small from the brand's perspective and didn't change that much. For example, I would rebrand, but then there would be an advertising campaign or a new website that would be out of my control. Therefore, I wanted to really get down to business and be responsible for a brand and all its output. It's a huge challenge, but a challenge I wanted. Made so much easier by being part of a team of exceptional talent and on top of that, they are all amazing people.
